The Third Air Force was originally constituted as the Southeast Air District on October 19, 1940. Activated on December 18, 1940, it was assigned to the Southern Air Command, designated the 3d Air Force on April 9, 1941, and re-designated Third Air Force on September 18, 1942. The organization carried out air defense duties during 1940 and 1941 and engaged in antisubmarine activities from December 1941 to October. 1942. It was assigned to the Army Air Forces in September 1943; and. continued training units, crews, and individuals for bombardment, fighter, and reconnaissance operations.
